Resource sites

You are making content for your visitors. You want to have a minimum of five things on your site (ie psds, textures, icons, signatures, tutorials etc.) unless you are focusing on one specific thing. You should make what you want and you can always add more content later to your site. I don't recommend having so much content on your site because that makes updating harder. If you are good at a specific thing then update that more, but the content you are not good at you should spend time practicing it. One thing you should never do is open your site with no content and have a bunch of *coming soon* links because people are mostly likely not going to comeback

Literature/fanfiction

If you are a literature site you should make a simple layout so viewers don't get distracted. When you open your lit. site, you don't have to have 30 chapters of a story up, but you should have a couple one-shots, drabbles, or poems so viewers can know your style and also get excited for when you do write a story

Layout/Graphic site

I think just about everyone have seen these site. These are the sites that were all over myspace with their glitter graphics and profile layouts. Most of these sites are still around. Since myspace is pretty much dead and there really isn't a popular social networking site where you can customize your profile and add layouts, most of these sites now make tumblr and facebook content. If you want to own one of these sites you will probably be making tons of graphics and icons. It's best to build slowly and make separate categories so the page isn't super long.
